Hearing aids are small, sophisticated electronic devices that are worn in or behind the ear. They consist of three main parts: a microphone, amplifier, and speaker. The microphone picks up sound from your surroundings and converts it into electrical signals. These signals are then amplified by the amplifier so that they’re louder. Finally, the speaker converts the amplified signals back into sound waves and delivers them to your ear.
Hearing aids come in a variety of styles, each of which has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. The three most common styles are Behind-The-Ear (BTE), Receiver-In-The-Canal (RIC), and In-The-Ear (ITE). BTE hearing aids are the largest type of hearing aid and are usually used for more severe hearing loss. RIC hearing aids are smaller than BTEs and fit snugly behind the ear. ITE hearing aids are custom-made to fit inside the bowl-shaped area of your outer ear.
